Is it horrible that I'm incredibly excited for new glasses? I mean I haven't had new glasses in like 7 years, so that could be why. Also I'm getting 2 pairs and and it only totaled $256.00...lenses and all.

Thank you BJ's.

The cats are getting along as best as can be expected. There is definitely confusion for who is dominant and who is not. I've finally gotten Tabitha to allow me to hold her belly up. This is good, it means I'm taking charge, and really I should be alpha cat. Goosa is surprisingly not dominant, and other than a few places he's completely non-possessive. Tabitha I believe is enjoying her new found freedom, as now she has a choice to be, well, what she wants. When she was around her brother the decision was made, and now its not. So its more work to make peace as we want Goosa to feel comfortable and Tabitha, which means they need to be on fairly equal ground.

Pete feels a bit out of his element, but really its simple. Stick to rules, rules rules rules. And there are places that growling and hissing are ok. I allow goosa to growl if she gets near him while he's eating, she should leave him alone, he's claiming his food dishes. She has her own, and he doesn't go near them, so we're good. He needs to start exploring her room though--that's my next goal. No personal space for either cat. But I can leave them alone around each other and there will be no fights. That's excellent. I give Tabitha a month or so before she falls completely in line and calms down a bit. She's a bit ADD right now, but I think that's because its all new and constantly changing.

So we're trying to "get settled." I think people forget that you power through packing, move in a day or two and then are left with the month of work getting back to normal.

Tabitha hissed at Goosa. We've been working to make Tabitha a positive experience for Goosa. Then she had to go and figure she could hiss and Goosa. Tsk. So given that she hissed (We of course told her no and rewarded Goosa for not eating her), we've let Goosa start to set his own boundaries. We were going to let him do this but figured she'd allow a day or two of us treating him for being nice. What we don't want is for her to make a bid for dominance. She's not going to be the dominant cat in the house, that's Goosa, simply because I've made myself his alpha cat, and he'll be above her in rankings. She'll be happier being the docile one in the long run as studies have shown the submissive animal has better blood pressure, but anyway she really will. She's also very young and I don't think she's had a good structure in her original house. So we're right into the rules. No cats on places where people have their food or prepare their food. No cats on the TV stand. Cats can go on the end tables, chairs, and couch. Cats can go on all cat stuff, and cats can go in the windows (just not via the side board where we prep food). Tabitha doesn't really respond to sounds--like claps, so we'll fill the spray bottle and see if that works.

Rules are good for cats, it'll keep her out of trouble, and it'll keep her safe, as well as provide exclusive areas that are hers. She's very talky, we didn't realize it before, but she'll walk into a room and just talk and then walk out. This is of course fine because Goosa is a talker, so hopefully they'll have conversations in the long run.

Goosa for himself has claimed the couch, and the bed, everywhere else he's willing to share. So I'm happy and he's been very reasonable. Tabitha responds very quickly to him growling, and his ears are forward so its just him claiming his areas, so I'm going to allow it.

Ok back to figuring out where i"m going to put everything.

We have kitty lift off. I took a day off as yesterday we swapped Tabitha into Goosa's (our) bedroom and goosa into tabitha's. Let me tell you neither was happy about being the other's room. We had to you see, because it became clear Goosa was happy to have tabitha forever stay in one room. It was simple, it was never his room, so she can have it, but he'll have the whole rest of the house. Um..no.

So we did that and well, it was--lots of meowing from both. We also swapped cat boxes, and well, they both used each others...and today I tried the cat treats...goosa doesn't get treated. He only gets cat treats when I clip his claws, so he does ANYTHING I tell him when I have treats. This includes a new cat. I gathered tabitha up into a cat carrier and let me tell you, she has a tiny little meow that'll break your heart and she did the whole "no not again I just got here." Well since I just took her across the hallway and she calmed down. So I treated goosa while he was being calm with her in the room, then I opened the carrier and she came out (gladly) and goosa remained calm. I treated him, petted him, heaped him with attention and told him he was the best kitty ever. Goosa if you hadn't noticed likes to be heaped with attention, plus the treats, he'd be ok in a hurricane. So they sniffed each other and well, that's that for cats. He's been around her since and no hissing.

We're going to keep them apart during the day and do the same introduction each day--treats and attention on goosa. We should be totally fine. Now we can work on Tabitha--she's wonderful, but is a little shy with new things, noises, doors, hallways...the hallway is a big hurtle. I'm not surprised its still not something goosa likes.

no longer in the robbins street place. We're paid through the first of the month...I called and left a message on Monday saying "We'll be all done by Friday, we have some stuff in the apartment that we're taking care of and we'll drop off the keys--on Friday." Um, so the landlady sent in the handyman today...and he went through all of Pete's old finances. Fan-Friggin-Tastic. As far as I know and as far as it seemed we could still have a ton of crap there and moving on Thursday. Like we're paid through the first we can be in there through the first. We should have been called and told about this first. Which we'd have said, can he do it tomorrow, or say FRIDAY.

Subject:Tabitha's Second Day
Time:07:33 pm
I actually didn't think I'd post today because I figured it'd be a day of status quo. It is only the second day of our standard routine (get up, get ready, go to work), and people, cats, rats, monkeys, cows, pigs and even children all like normal daily routines. People get grumpy when routine goes out the window. People get grumpy when their normal tasks are done in a different order, heck people are such creatures of patterns and habits they even imagine seeing patterns even if there are really no patterns.

So this morning we got up, said good morning to goosa as we always do, and as he's happy to have us do and then he stood in front of tabitha's door. Pete was in the shower and I figured, hey I have to go in and say good morning to tabitha anyway I may as well let goosa lead the welcome wagon. So he did. Tabitha's taken to hiding underneath this old ugly white thing that tends to hold our dvd's and music for lack of a better system, so she was under there. I simply sat on the floor and let goosa do his exploring. He went in with his back haunches down and was sniffing EVERYTHING. Tabitha was totally cool, she came out very slowly and she stayed low. Goosa finally saw her and of course hissed then growled, but then ran away. Tabitha was like, eh whatever and came to get her morning pets.

Now, goosa while hissing and growling still did well, I don't imagine he's going to be happy, he's a cat and he has to assert his dominance over everything and his people. BUT he just went back into our room, I came back in when I was done saying good morning to Tabitha and he let me love him up.

This evening when we came home we actually tried something a bit different. We had one of us petting goosa in the hallway in front of tabitha's room with the door to her room open. Tabitha this time didn't do as well, not because of goosa but because the open door was new and she wasn't comfortable. She still had happy paws underneath the ugly white thingy, but wouldn't come out to get her petting. We're not petting her when she's hiding, she has to come out to get petting and because she likes petting so much she did finally come out--she was still in contact with the ugly white thing, but she did get her whole body out with the door open.

So we're going to take it slowly and do it this way. Tabitha has started growling at noises, I'm not sure what good the growling will do, but we'll get her all acclimated. Heck goosa hasn't explored the kitchen yet so I'm not expecting miracles. But he was SO good tonight with her in plain sight that we're definitely encouraged.

Subject:Tabitha First Full Day
Time:09:53 pm
Current Mood:hothot
Well, I can't really speak to how she or goosa spent their first full days in the same house. Goosa probably curled up on the couch, then moved to the bed, then moved to under the couch--he has an extremely taxing life. Tabitha though...I know she likes to sit in the window so I imagine she was hanging out there some of the day.

Goosa's finally been sniffing me and putting his ears back, but isn't so put out that he stops purring and stalks away. He seems to give me the look of "you've been cheating on me I can smell her on you, but I love you too much to shun the petting." I did put his food and water right next to her door and he's been eating and drinking. He's stared at the door a couple of times, but hasn't been more curious than that. If by Wednesday he shows NO signs of curiosity (which is a real possibility in goosa, he's a big wimp), I'll swap their living quarters for a few hours. I'll put Tabitha in our room and Goosa in her room.

Tabitha herself is a super sweety. I'm impressed at how well she's done. Hats off to Sadie who must have worked very hard with her. It was clear that Tabitha loves being petted, but after only a day if Pete or I go and sit quietly in the room she'll come out of her hiding spot and rub all over us wanting to be petted. She flops over and insists on rubbing her head into your hand. She's a big mush. She herself doesn't seem to care that there may be another cat, which is good. She isn't curious about the rest of the apartment yet either, but I'm alright with that...we're not moved in and there are a number of places she can go hide and I'd rather she be super comfy with us first.

Anyway tomorrow will probably be much the same, so let's see how wednesday goes!

Well much has gone on in the last two weeks. We were packing for a move, and I had a trade show. Pete got an infection in a tooth, a terrible infection, while I was in DC for ACS. He lost the tooth, but with some powerful antibiotics he's on the mend. Of course the next several dental appointments I'm sure he'll feel better and better with newly cleaned teeth and no more pain.

We moved on Friday, and our friend Joe was amazing. He was super clutch in the face of two people who hadn't fully finished packing. But we did most everything and finished up with a whirl of activity on Saturday. The Armoire defeated us temporarily. It ended up being taken apart fully...and it will go back together again at some point.

Sunday was RCN and Tabitha. RCN came and had their work cut out for them as he was in the basement, outside, in the house, back to the basement, back outside, basement, house. He was doing circles, but we're set up.

Tabitha arrived this afternoon. Very anti-climatic since goosa has holed himself up in our room and won't leave the vicinity of the bedroom. Tabitha, despite having been given up for adoption, staying in foster care AND now being in a new home is doing surprisingly well. She's at least exploring the room some, goosa just hid himself under the duvet cover. So now we have two kitties who not only need introducing to each other, but both are in a shy unsure state of being. We hope that that makes them open to bonding-- or at least too distracted to be upset. Tabitha doesn't seem to mind the other smell of cats, goosa sniffed me some and then didn't seem to care.

So the funniest part of today is that I had to extract tabitha from the inside of an old dresser--Pete pulled out the drawers while I added support because she squished herself up behind the drawers. It was odd to look up and see a cat face looking down at me like "what this seems totally reasonable."

She seems to pant when she's stressed, it IS warm in here, so we will keep an eye on her and goosa to make sure they don't end up lethargic and needing fluids.

So this will be the first of the Tabitha and Goosa posts. We are keeping her name as she wasn't abused, just needed people devoted to her. and itty bitty tabitha is cute. Pictures will eventually go up on facebook.

14 days until the cruise!!
I have 2 swimsuits, 2 cover-ups, sandals--I need brown sandals, two dresses, 4 pairs of capris, plenty of t-shirts. I'm not feeling the formal nights, but one of the dresses should work because we'll probably do one of the formal nights...

Snuba, dunns river falls, tulum...here I come.

We tried Carol Fenster's Buttermilk Pancake Recipe but it looked like:

1 1/3 cup sorghum flour
2/3 cup cornstarch
1/4 c sugar
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp xanthum gum
1 cup buttermilk
1/4 cup vegie oil
2 large eggs
2 tsp vanilla

They were killer!
